Radlett Park Golf Club History
Formed in 1984, Radlett Park Golf Club was formerly known as Elstree Golf Club. The course was originally a 9 hole Parkland course with a small golf clubhouse. The Original Elstree owners were architects who created the 1st course layout and designed the original building. During the 1986 season the course was converted to 18 holes and was redesigned by Donald Steel. Ponds and streams were brought into play on the back 9 holes. Further additions to the site in 1986 included the build of a 15 bay floodlight golf range.
1987 saw the club ownership change to London Golf & Leisure, new owners brought fresh ideas and improvements to the complex. In 1989 a significant tree planting program was promoted to define the outline of each hole, extra adjoining land was purchased and the floodlight golf range was extended to 64 bays.
Further planning permission was granted in 1989 at Elstree to build a second 18 hole course using the land surrounding the original design, only the recession of the late 80’s and early 1990’s stopped the build of these extra holes.
During 1991/2 the course was lengthened to approximately 6500 yards. Design changes to the course were significant during this period. The old par three 5th hole & short par four 17th were scrapped and new 12thand 14th holes were introduced. The 15th hole was increased in length from a par 3 to a par 5 with the 18thhole redesigned and lengthened significantly. The extra length to the course allowed the par and standard scratch score to be increased to reflect the increased challenge each golfer faced.
As the club matured during the 90’s the original clubhouse was extended to incorporate a function room, conservatories, staff accommodation, offices and basement areas. Year by year the management of the club were committed to an ongoing programme of improvements to enhance the reputation as one of the finest courses to play in the area.
During the year 2000 the club changed owners once again with the clubs current owners the Cottrell family purchasing the club. Since the turn of the century the reputation of the club continued to grow as the golf club repositioned itself as one of the finest 18 hole golf courses twinned with outstanding undercover floodlight practice facilities.
More recently the golf club has made further improvements whilst re branding to Radlett Park, the enlarged water hazards on the 11th and 17th holes has now become a major feature of both holes, a three tier 18th green and repositioned 11th tee have all added to the golfing experience at the club. Further improvements to the course are due to enhance the golfing enjoyment as well as relaxing in the wonderful new golf clubhouse.
